Patrician Brothers
History
In the year 1808 the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Bishop Daniel Delany, founded the Brothers of St. Patrick, Patrician Brothers, in Tullow, Co. Carlow. He had founded the Sisters of St. Brigid, Brigidine Sisters, in the same town a year earlier.
Like most Irish towns of the day, the majority of the residents of Tullow and surrounding districts endured a very poor quality of lifestyle. Most were very poor materially and most were deprived of access to any kind of formal education.
The local Bishop, who had been educated in France, was appalled and saddened by the plight of his parishioners. The establishment of two Religious Congregations in the town was an important part of his plan to improve especially the lot children and young adults in the district. He wanted to relieve young people of the tyranny of ignorance, to enable them to grow in their feeling of self-worth and to grow also in their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith.
This was the context in which the Patrician Brothers were founded almost 200 years ago.
Though circumstances have changed dramatically since then, ministry to young people through education in Catholic schools has remained the main focus of the Patrician Brothers. Whereas the Brothers were one time the workforce in the schools they now seek to be the leaven, sharing with their co-workers their desire to see that all aspects of education are enriched with a practical expression of the Gospel values.
