The Challenge of St Francis
The world has changed many times over since Francis' day and yet, sadly, so many of the same conditions and problems have returned in our own time.
Millions of words pour out on how to solve these problems, how to chande conditions, how to shake up the apathetic. These words, whether they come from Governments or from churches, are heard as cliches that fail to arouse. The only principle that seems to make any sense to so many people today is stated in Paul Simon's classic song:
And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true:
I stand alone without beliefs,
The only truth I know is you.
Francis of Assisi would have accepted that principle with total understanding, It would have triggered off in his memory the words of Christ in the Gospel: "You are to be my witnesses."
The Core commitment of the Irish Franciscans is
To bring the Good News to the Poor
To his own followers, then and now, Fancis said in effect: Be special. You may be the only gospel your neighbour will ever read.
