Carmelites
The Carmelites are a religious order committed to the care and needs of people in all five continents of the world. They are the successors of the hermits who lived in the spirit of Elijah on Mount Carmel in Israel.
To pray and do the work of the Church is the call of the Carmelites. The Order's first foundations in Ireland were at Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow and in Dublin (very near the present site of Whitefriar Street Church) between 1274-1278. Carmelites work in many areas bringing the message of Jesus 'love into as many hearts and homes as possible.
The wide variety in the active apostolate gives us endless opportunities to fulfil and speak the Word of God... being part of Parish Life caring for families ... Hospital Chaplaincy, teaching young people in our schools and in our universities... taking care ofthe needs ofthe poor and workingforjustice... Retreats and Renewal Courses... and as Missionaries being the hands, the feet and the voice of Christ to people in other lands. One way in which Mary is honoured in the Carmelite family is through the Brown Scapular.
The wearing of the Scapular is a sign that we want the values lived out by Mary to influence our thoughts, words and actions. Community is a strong active force for Religious Life today. While the purpose of living in community is always for the service of others in the Spirit of Christ, the actual service together is a source of great warmth, support, encouragement and prayer. Does the prospect ofspending your life in the giving and receiving ofGod'sfriendship attract you sufficiently to give up anything else which might get in the way of that? Life is short and/have only one life to lead. I want to do the best thing possible with this one life.
