Loreto Sisters - Institute of the BVM

Our Beginnings:
Loreto - IBVM was founded in the seventeenth century by a courageous woman, Mary Ward. Her ideas regarding the place of women for mission in the Church were so radical that she was imprisoned.

Her desire to live justly and truthfully in a spirit of freedom and joy led her to a passionate involvement in the education of women (which was virtually unheard of at the time), to visiting prisoners, caring for the sick and giving spiritual guidance, which in the political climate of her day was a dangerous venture.

Times have changed but the challenge has not. Today our work takes us in various directions according to the needs of our society, using our gifts and abilities in relationship with the Spirit.
